Back to school: Be more productive with Xodo!

Like it or not, summer’s starting to wind down, and that means one thing for many of us: back to school! Whether you’re looking forward to school or dreading it, you can be more productive this year by using Xodo both inside and outside the classroom. Check out how you can make school stress-free (or to be more realistic, less stressful) with Xodo:

Take notes on lecture slides without printing

On many campuses, students scribbling notes onto printed lecture slides is a common sight. But instead of wasting time and paper, why not just open your slides as PDFs in Xodo? You can swipe through the slides as the lecture goes on, adding notes and highlighting points on the way.

Solve problems and draw diagrams on blank PDFs

Solving a complex differential equation or drawing structural formulas often takes more than one try to get right, resulting in piles of wasted paper. Instead, you can create a blank PDF in Xodo to be your notepad and use the Ink tool to draw or write with your finger or stylus.

With Xodo, you don’t have to be afraid to make mistakes, since you can erase parts of your work with the Eraser tool. Try out Xodo’s range of colors and opacities to make things look the way you want – and if you need to print out your work, you can do that from Xodo.

Leave feedback – for yourself and others

Want to write better essays? It’s important to write well, but it’s equally important to edit well. Remember to edit your work a day or two after writing to ensure that you’re looking at it with fresh eyes. Xodo allows you to circle mistakes, leave suggestions in the margin, and strikeout unnecessary sentences.

If a friend asks you to proofread their work at the last minute, you can open it as a PDF in Xodo, edit, and share via email or whatever medium you want. As long as your friend views your PDF in a standard PDF viewer like Xodo or Acrobat, they’ll see all your annotations and edits.

Keep all your reading in one place

Writing a research paper often means poring over a ton of articles to find ones relevant to your thesis. You can keep your articles in one place by adding them to your bookshelf in the Xodo web app. That way, you can also access them on the go from the Xodo Android app. Annotations are synced across the two apps, so you can pick up right where you left off.

Find the passage you were looking for

If you’ve ever written a research paper, you’ve probably encountered this problem: recalling the perfect quote to prove your point, but not being able to remember where you read it. With Xodo’s new and improved search function, it’s much easier to pinpoint the passage you’re looking for. You can quickly scroll through a list of search results, complete with section headings, page numbers, and surrounding text, to find what you need.

Save ideas from brainstorming sessions

Group projects are the bane of every student’s existence, but they can be a little less painful with Xodo. Brainstorming ideas on a whiteboard is a common way to generate ideas from a group, since having everyone huddled around one notebook or tablet isn’t efficient. At the end of the meeting, take a photo of the whiteboard in Xodo. You can share it with your group members so everyone has access to the ideas you came up with together.

Work together without getting together

Once you’ve completed your portion of a group project, you can use Xodo to share it with your group members. Invite them using their email addresses and they can view your work from their browser and leave you in-context feedback. Now you can get useful feedback without the hassle of coordinating in-person meetings.

Put it all together

Once you have everything you need for your assignment, you can put it all together in the Xodo web app by merging PDFs. Inserting diagrams, supporting articles, and resources is a breeze. Once you’re done, download the merged PDF to your computer to send it to your instructor.

We know that going back to school isn’t something everyone looks forward to, but we hope that these tips will help you out this coming school year. Let us know if there’s any other ways you use Xodo for academic success!

Access PDFs on Google Drive

If you already store your documents on Google Drive, you probably don’t want to bother uploading them to another service to edit and annotate. With the Xodo web app, you can directly access PDFs on Google Drive without any uploading or downloading. You can annotate your PDFs as you like and share with collaborators to gather feedback.

Online collaboration

In Xodo, you invite your collaborators directly via their email addresses. Collaborators can leave comments right on the document and have access to Xodo’s diverse toolkit, including highlighting text, drawing freehand, and inserting signatures. Xodo eliminates the hassle of back-and-forth email chains and out-of-context feedback, without requiring your clients, colleagues, friends, or family to sign up for an account.

Secure: your files never leave your computer

Sure, Xodo is great for when you need feedback from your friends or colleagues. But how about when you want to just read and make notes on your own? Unlike other similar services, when you choose to open a PDF locally in Xodo, the document is never uploaded to a public server, meaning no one sees it except you. Unless you specifically choose to share your document with others, it stays on your computer, for your eyes only.

This also means that your document loads faster, since you don’t need to wait to upload and download files, and you can keep organizing, merging, and editing files even when you’re offline!

Print directly from your browser

Unlike similar services, Xodo lets you print documents directly from your browser, instead of downloading documents to your computer to print them.

Multiple view modes and flexible zoom

Depending on whether you’re reading a textbook, signing a contract, or checking over a blueprint, you probably want flexible viewing modes to accommodate your needs. Xodo offers these viewing modes:

  • Single: display one page, scroll horizontally
  • Continuous: display one page, scroll vertically
  • Facing: display two pages side by side, scroll horizontally
  • Facing Continuous: display two pages side by side, scroll vertically
  • Cover: display two pages side by side with cover first, scroll horizontally
  • Cover Continuous: display two pages side by side with cover first, scroll vertically

Xodo also provides flexible zoom options – you can enter the percentage of zoom level you want.

More annotation options

Annotation_bar

The large variety of annotation tools that Xodo offers is what places it one step ahead of competitors. Annotation types include comment notes, text highlights, text underlines, signatures, text, arrows, and more. You can edit your annotations’ color, size/thickness, and opacity afterwards by simply clicking the annotation itself to access a handy pop-up menu.

Use without signing in (NEW!)

Sometimes you just need to quickly add a signature to a contract or scribble something in the margins of your notes, and having to create an account and logging in isn’t ideal. With the new Xodo web app, you can now view and edit files without logging in, eliminating one extra step in your workflow. And if you want to create an account, we only require your email.

And more!

Xodo has many other great features not covered here. The Xodo web app is available for free, so we hope you’ll try it out if you haven’t already. Let us know what you think on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+!

Xodo: An Alternative to RepliGo Reader…and More!

Editor’s Note: This post has been updated to include newer Xodo features available since September 2015.

In the past few months, many users have downloaded Xodo as an alternative to RepliGo Reader, a popular PDF annotation app that was recently removed from the Play Store. If you’ve ever looked for a PDF annotation app on the Play Store, you know that it’s a competitive market – so if you’ve migrated over from RepliGo, we’d like to thank you for choosing Xodo and welcome you to the Xodo community!

At Xodo, our team works daily to ensure that Xodo stands out from the rest by adding new features, enhancing current functionalities, and actively supporting and connecting with our users.

Is Xodo a good alternative to RepliGo? Here are the features that Xodo has in common with RepliGo:

  • PDF viewing, annotation, and form filling
  • Night mode for comfortable PDF reading in dark environments
  • Read files stored on external SD cards
  • Variety of annotation tools, including highlight, strikeout, underline, comment notes, arrows, lines, rectangles, freehand drawing, and text boxes
  • Ability to change color, thickness, and add a note for annotations
  • Open password protected files
  • Navigate long documents using bookmarks, go to page, search, and thumbnails
  • Display recent documents and open documents to the last page visited
  • Scroll pages horizontally or vertically
  • Synced with Dropbox
  • Document rotation
  • Comments stored as standard annotations in original PDF file

In addition to these features, here’s some extra features Xodo has:

  • Cross-platform | While we don’t have a BlackBerry app like RepliGo did, we’re available on Android, iOS, Windows phones and tablets, and as a web app and Chrome extension.
  • Syncing | In addition to Dropbox, Xodo is synced with Google Drive.
  • Editing pages | Insert blank pages, delete pages, and change the order of pages.
  • Signing documents | Sign documents manually and save your signature for future use.
  • Tabs | Open multiple PDFs and easily navigate from PDF to PDF using tabbed viewing.
  • Free | Xodo is completely free, with no ads, in-app purchases, or premium tier (and no plans to change that!).
