Best PDF Word Cloud

Xodo reviews word cloud

We thought it would be fun to visualize what the Xodo community thinks of Xodo by making a review-based word cloud. Here’s the result!

How did we make this? We took the text from all the reviews left on the Google Play store during the month of January and gave it to Wordle. The larger the word, the more frequently it appears reviews. Needless to say we’re happy with the positive feedback!

We have a ton of new features and enhancements in the pipeline, so stay tuned for even more Xodo goodness to come!

Xodo PDF – Now with tabs

We’re excited to announce that Xodo for Android now has browser style tabs! This feature allows instant switching between documents so that you can save time and maintain focus. Tabs are by far the most requested feature, so we hope you’re as excited as we are to see them hit the Play Store.

How does it work?

Xodo supports up to three tabs on phones and five tabs on tablets. When a document is opened it will open in a new tab. If the maximum number of tabs are already open, then the tab that has been least recently viewed is automatically closed. Of course the recent list will continue to work as it always has, so it can continue to be used to switch between documents too.

What do you think?

Do you like the new tabs? What should we do next? We’re always eager to hear from the Xodo community, so please let us know what you think at http://xodo.uservoice.com/ so that together we can make Xodo the #1 PDF app!

Top Xodo tips for getting back into the groove

It’s that wonderful time of year when the air gets crisp, your readings start to pile up faster than the falling leaves, and you’re thinking about how to ration your instant noodles to afford costumes for Halloween.

Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - Making School Less Depressing
Everyone is delighted to be back in class.

Wherever you are in the world, whether you’ve just started the new school year or are approaching the final stretch, the Xodo Team feels your pain.

We can’t do much about your food stocks (or your Halloween costumes), but we can make your studies easier!

To help you out, I asked our Development and Support team about their favorite Xodo tips and tricks.

Whether you’re working alone or interacting in a group, here are a few things you might not know you could do to make school just a little more tolerable with Xodo…

Xodo tips for when you’re working with others

Quickly share your work with classmates or instructors anywhere on the web without using email

Made comments on a PDF that you’d like to run by your classmates in your Facebook study group? Want to share class notes with a friend on Twitter? Need to quickly link a PDF article in an online class forum and can’t find the original URL?

Xodo makes it easy to do all these things, and that gets Vikki excited.

“My favorite thing about Xodo is that I can easily share documents on the web.”

Forget email. Forget uploading or attaching documents. Just get a link and share it.

To start, tap or click on theXodo Connect Xodo Connect icon, enter your name, and press OK. On the next screen, simply press OK – no need to enter emails or adjust settings.

Then head to Xodo’s browsing menu – clicking on the logo at the top left should work – and select the Xodo Connect tab. Find the document you just shared, press and hold (or right-click), and select Get Link.

This will copy a URL you can paste anywhere to open a read-only copy of your document.

Bonus tip: You can use Xodo Connect to deliver a remote presentation without the need for any installed tools or services. Just grab the link, share it with your audience any way you like, and then annotate the document while they’re viewing it.

Share, review, and discuss whiteboards or lecture notes using just your camera and Connect

Most classrooms have whiteboards. Whiteboards are great. They’re big, they’re bold, and they come with all kinds of colorful markers. (And who doesn’t like colorful markers?)

Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - Use Connect to capture and comment on whiteboards
Sadly, our whiteboards here at Xodo aren’t nearly this cool.

Unfortunately, all whiteboards eventually get cleaned. The important information disappears. And it’s really difficult for a group of people to add notes or comments to that information once the board has been erased.

What would be ideal is if there was some simple way to capture the information on the board in a central place where people can easily comment on it or even annotate it.

Kevin loves Xodo because it lets him do exactly that.

“After a meeting where we’ve scribbled a bunch of stuff on a whiteboard, I use Xodo to create a PDF from my iPad camera, and then I use Xodo Connect to share it with all the meeting participants. I like it because it lets everyone review and take notes on the document even after the meeting is done.”

Of course, you don’t have to confine yourself to whiteboards. Xodo will also let you do this with projectors, screens, and anything else you can take a photo of.

To convert a photo to a PDF you can use with Xodo, all you need to do is open the photo on your device the way you normally would, share it, and select Xodo from your sharing options.

Now, when you open Xodo, you’ll find the image at the top of your Recent Files list. Open the document and share it with your study group or other classmates by sending them an email invitation from Xodo Connect.

For easy instructions and more information about how to use Connect, check out this blog post.

Download the annotated PDF to preserve a snapshot of your work in Connect

It’s one thing to be able to collaborate on the fly without the need for email or having to install an annotator. But did you know that anyone in your group can save “hard copies” of the work you’ve done at any point?

It’s simple, says Matt.

“You just need to press the download button from inside Xodo Connect and then you’ll have a snapshot of all the comments for reference and offline viewing.”

To do that, open the document with Connect. On a desktop, simply click the download icon in the toolbar. On a mobile device, open your Settings menu (top right of the toolbar on most devices), and tap or click Download as PDF.

Xodo tips for when you’re working alone

When doing research online, save any PDF from your browser directly to Xodo using “Open With” (iPad/iPhone)

Xodo is a lot more powerful than your browser’s default viewer, and you can do a lot more with it.

For example, while you can annotate in Xodo, you can’t annotate PDFs if you open them directly through your browser. (Not unless you’re using Xodo Connect, that is!)

If you use your iPad to do a lot of your browsing and research, you’ll enjoy Ryan‘s tip:

“When I am surfing the web, and I find a PDF I want to read offline, I just tap the document, and select ‘Open With’ and then ‘Xodo’, and now I have it offline whenever I want in my Xodo inbox. I can then organize documents and folders later on.”

This is a quick and simple way to save PDFs to your device, and it works with just about any browser.

Instantly zoom into an important block of text

Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - Helpful tips and tricks for school
Of course, staying awake is *also* important to success in school.

When you double tap on a section of text, Xodo zooms into that block, with the borders of the text becoming the borders of the screen.

Anatoly likes this because it helps him maintain his focus.

“While reading a large document it allows me to quickly zoom into the paragraph of text I am interested in.”

For people with poor eyesight, this is a simple way to reduce eye strain. It’s also useful for annotating parts of formulas or diagrams in physics and chemistry readings.

“Lock” the annotation toolbar while making lots of edits to save time

Sometimes you just want to read and maybe underline a couple of things here and there. But when you’re really buckling down to study, there’s a good chance any black-and-white page will soon look like a graffiti wall of colored highlights and squiggly lines.

Wouldn’t it be perfect if you could have the annotation toolbar in front of you the whole time?

Well, you can! In fact, this is Tomas‘s favorite trick.

“I change the settings to turn continuous annotation edit on when I have to make a lot of notes on one page and turn it off when I mostly read and only take occasional notes.”

To “lock” the toolbar, go to your app’s Settings menu and find Continuous Annotation Edit under the General heading. Make sure the box next to it is checked, then navigate back to your document.

Now, when you open the annotation toolbar, select a tool, and mark your document up with it, Xodo doesn’t automatically jump back to thePanPan tool after every annotation.

This is one way to speed up your annotating. But there are others. For example…

Annotate on the fly by scrolling with two fingers and editing with one

If you value efficiency even half as much as Shirley does, then this is the tip for you:

“My favorite trick is how you can use two fingers to scroll the page while highlighting or creating shapes such as lines, arrows, rectangles, and ovals with just one finger. This is especially useful when you’re reading a textbook and just want to highlight important keywords.”

If you’re only using one annotation tool – for example, if you plan to do nothing but highlight for long periods of time – you can save yourself lots of time by “locking” the toolbar the way Tomas suggested, selecting the Highlight tool, and then using two-finger scrolling to read and highlight on the fly.

Yup, it’s that simple. Scroll with two fingers. Annotate with one finger. No need to find the select or pan tools.

Easily resize any highlight, underline, or strikeout after you made it

Did your finger slip before you were done highlighting a sentence? Realized while reviewing your notes that you should have underlined the entire paragraph instead of just a few words?

Relax! You don’t have to delete and start over. As James points out, there’s an easy way to fix it in Xodo.

“If you make a highlight, and then tap to select it, you can use the text selection handles to resize it. Cool!”

The text selection handles – also sometimes called cursors – are the dots that appear at the far ends of an annotation when you select it. Hold and drag them to resize any highlight, underline, or strikeout.

I hope these tips help make your life just a little bit easier. School doesn’t have to be a total drag!

How about you? Do you have any Xodo tips of your own? Still unsure about how some of these tips and tricks work?

Xodo | Transforming how the world works with PDFs

Xodo 2.1 is our sweetest release yet

After launching live group PDF collaboration as part of Xodo 2.0 last month, our Dev Team focused on making Xodo’s in-app experience more dynamic and user-friendly than ever.

Xodo is the sweetest PDF app around.
If we’re talking about PDFs, Xodo is the cherry on every cake. Even tiny ones.

I may be a bit biased, but I definitely think they succeeded.

Xodo 2.1 features a number of upgrades for an easier and more versatile PDF reading experience. We also made annotating faster and more intuitive. Finally, to put the cherry on the cake, we added in-app PDF scanning.

Please note that this update is only for Android and iOS devices, but if you’re a Windows user, don’t fret – we’ll be adding more features for your devices soon.

Bug Fixes
  • Numerous small improvements and fixes to correct minor bugs and crashes

There are more changes in the works for August and September, including some really exciting additions that users have been requesting for a while. I’m dying to spill the beans, but I promised I’d keep it secret, so for now my keyboard is sealed.

Xodo | Transforming how the world works with PDFs

Overheard in Google Play: “Xodo is the best PDF annotator for Android” and other valuable user feedback

No animals were harmed during the making of Xodo.
No monkeys were harmed during the making of Xodo.

When we launched Xodo, we set out to create a truly unique and valuable mobile PDF app.

Our intention was – and still is – to shake up the competition by providing a superior PDF reader and annotator with premium features for free. (Completely free. Even ad-free.)

It also had to be user-friendly. We wanted it to be so easy to install and work with that even a monkey could do it.

Thanks to our wonderful users, we never had to test Xodo on monkeys. This is a lucky thing for the monkeys and for us, since our users are far smarter, and also 99.9% more likely to type and post reviews to app stores.

And post reviews they have!

Our most popular app is Xodo for Android devices. Not surprisingly, we receive the majority of user reviews on our Google Play store.

Most of the feedback has been fantastic.

It always makes us happy to see other people get as excited about Xodo as we are. Clearly, we’re doing some things right!

According to our Android users, Xodo is…

“Simply the best!”

“Better than all the rest!”

(Even Adobe and ezPDF)

“Will take over ezPDF reader.”
Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator is better than Adobe!
“PDF Reader that just works and doesn’t try to sell you disabled features like Adobe.”
Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator is better than Adobe!
“This app is a saving grace. Before I used to take all my PDF notes with Adobe Reader. But then they updated it and I can no longer use my docking keyboard on my tablet. This app is officially the best … when using a keyboard on your tablet.”
Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator is just as good as Nitro's PC software!
“Amazing app for editing PDF documents. Documents even look better as compared to other apps. This is the only Android app which has similar features as the PC application ‘Nitro PDF’.”

As you can tell, we hang on every word you say!

But not all feedback is sunshine and lollipops.

Users also comment to highlight problems they’ve encountered or just to voice their general frustration. Clearly, we still have many things to learn.

We look at these situations as opportunities to improve.

For example, some of our users recently ran into problems using their external SD cards with Xodo…

Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team
Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team
Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team

The way we see it, it must be very annoying to download a versatile PDF app like Xodo only to find yourself unable to access your PDFs with it. That’s the whole point of getting the app!

We apologized for their understandable frustration and suggested that they contact our Support Team.

Then we reached out to the Support Team separately, as well, just to make sure they were aware of the problem. The quicker they find out about an issue, the quicker they can fix it.

We’re happy to report that the problem was quickly resolved.

Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team

We also like to take users’ advice.

People often post suggestions for new features. Although the best place for that would be the Uservoice forum, we’d be fools to ignore our users’ great ideas no matter where we read them.

For example, Alix’s comment was a common one in Xodo’s early days…

Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team
“Best annotator yet! Only thing holding me back from 5 stars is I wish there were more colors for highlighting and underlining. Keep it up!”

And, of course, we obliged!

Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team

Moral of the story? We love the compliments, but all feedback is good feedback.

Google Play Reviews - Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - A dedicated and responsive team
“The only PDF annotator I use. If something does not work, worth emailing the team, as they are extremely responsive and helpful.”

We’re always thankful when people take the time to write a review or comment about Xodo. As far as we’re concerned, all user input is valuable, because it improves the experience for everyone else.

If we know what people like, we can make sure Xodo retains those qualities for everyone.

And if we know what people don’t like – or, more immediately, what’s broken – we can work to improve or fix those things for everyone.

So thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and keep that feedback coming!

Still hasn't figured out how to post feedback.
We really do love hearing from all our users.

What do you think?

What’s your favorite thing about Xodo? What would you change?

Xodo | Transforming how the world works with PDFs

Collaborating on PDFs with Xodo Connect

Ever wished you could turn your PDF into a virtual meeting room?

Perhaps one of these scenarios rings a bell…

  • You just finished a proposal and need to get feedback from your coworkers
  • You need to get corrections from your advisor before you can wrap up your thesis
  • You are a real estate agent and need quick input on some property listings
  • You and a colleague need to respond to a brief first thing tomorrow but you live in different cities
  • You are reviewing a complex new product design with your technical team
  • You are revising a contract and want input from other company departments
  • You and your study group need an easy way to work together on digital class notes
  • You are designing a logo and need feedback from your clients

These are just a few common situations that involve groups working together on PDFs. But no matter where you are or what you’re doing, PDF collaboration can be tough.

Use Xodo Connect to collaborate on PDFs from any device.
With Xodo, it’s easy to Connect and collaborate on PDFs no matter where you are.

You can’t just mark up a PDF with any old reader. Everyone in your group needs an annotator with the right tools for the job – this can be a nightmare to find, often requiring annoying downloads, frustrating installs, and even a chunk of your hard-earned cash.

Then there’s the matter of working on the document itself. Passing PDFs back and forth is a headache. Mark-ups get messy, comments get lost, and valuable content gets hidden behind confusing or conflicting version titles.

And let’s not forget those email threads which either go on forever or splinter and scatter through your inbox, sprouting attachments like weeds. It’s hard to figure out who’s talking to whom about what, and half of what you have to say gets lost in the noise anyway.

All of this wastes energy, time, and money.

You need a lightweight, easy, hassle-free way to work on PDFs no matter where you are or what device you’re using. You need a solution that’s consistent, clear, and keeps everything neatly in one place.

You need Xodo Connect.

Let’s look at an example…

You are an energetic and tech-savvy graphic designer.

You’ve been hired to design a website for a small startup.

Xodo can leap any PDF in a single bound!
Not as dashing as Superman, but better with PDFs!

The owners, Alysha and Karim, need to wrap everything up before their meeting with the developer later in the week. The clock is ticking, but that’s the way you like it.

In fact, you’ve already whipped up a great initial design based on their requirements. Now you need their input before you can start the final draft.

But you have a problem. Alysha and Karim don’t have time to meet with you in person before the deadline. You’ll have to send them something to review electronically.

Your design combines graphics and text, so the smart option is to convert it to PDF, then send it to them for feedback and suggestions. But none of you have the time (or the patience) to wade through a long, confusing email thread bulging with poorly labeled document attachments.

This looks like a job for Xodo Connect!

You grab your iPad to invite Alysha and Karim to Connect and collaborate.

Starting your connection

  1. Open the PDF in Xodo’s mobile app and tap on the  Xodo Connect Icon - Live PDF Collaboration  Connect icon in the Action Bar.
  1. Enter your own name and email and tap OK, then enter Alysha and Karim’s email addresses and tap OK again to send the invitations.
  1. To open the file in Xodo Connect so you can join your collaborators, return to Xodo’s browsing menu and tap on Xodo Connect, then tap your document to get started.

When Alysha and Karim receive the invitation, they simply click on the link in the email Xodo sent them on your behalf. This opens the document in their web browser.

That’s it. No tricks. No gimmicks. It’s fast, it’s free, it’s painless. And it works for anyone, anywhere.

Within a couple minutes, you’re all online. Time to get started!

Annotating your PDF

Xodo has a diverse selection of PDF annotation tools. With Xodo Connect, the three of you can…

Comment Note  Insert sticky note comments
Highlight0  Highlight text
Underline  Underline text
Strikeout  Strikeout text
Circle  Create ellipses
Square  Create rectangles
Line  Create straight lines
Ink Draw freehand

Using her PC, Alysha highlights, underlines, and adds sticky notes to text descriptions she wants you to change. Karim prefers his Galaxy Note tablet, using the Ellipse and Freehand tools to circle parts of your design and scribble rough alternatives with his finger.

You add comments to their annotations as they work through the document. For example, Karim circled a picture of an emu, but you’re not sure why. This information is important to your finished design – you need more details. Is it the color of the bird? The size? The position? Or maybe he just detests birds?

You better add a note to his annotation to find out what he means.

Commenting on annotations

  1. From the annotations toolbar, tap the  Select Icon - Xodo Connect - Live PDF Collaboration  Select tool.
  1. Tap on Karim’s annotation. (On a desktop device, you double-click his annotation after clicking the  Select Icon - Xodo Connect - Live PDF Collaboration  Select tool.)
  1. The comment box appears. “I’m not sure why you circled the emu. Could you provide more details?” you type. Then save the note.

You move on to review other annotations. There’s lots to be done and not much time to do it. But you check the Annotations outline regularly to see if anyone’s answered your questions.

Viewing all annotations and comments in one place

The Annotations outline allows anyone in your group to quickly browse mark-ups and read comments in one convenient place.

  • Annotations Icon - Xodo Connect - Live PDF CollaborationIf you’re on a desktop device like Alysha, the Annotations outline is on the left panel, below the Annotation tools when you click on the Annotations icon.
  • Collaborators & Chat Icon - Xodo Connect - Live PDF CollaborationIf you’re using a mobile device like Karim, the Annotations outline is accessed by tapping on the Collaborators & Chat icon in the main toolbar.
Not regal enough!
Less regal than an eagle.

After adding notes to some of Alysha’s highlights, you check the Annotations outline and notice that Karim already replied to your question about the bird.

It turns out he actually loves birds, but he thinks eagles are more regal than emus. And now that you think about it, he’s right. Time to go hunting for the most regal eagle photos you can find!

With the input Alysha and Karim have already provided, you feel comfortable starting on the final design while they continue annotating. You’ll check back in a couple of hours to see what other suggestions they’ve added.

Now you’re confident you’ll hit your deadline. This is going to be your best design yet!

This is just one example of how to use Xodo Connect to work together in groups. The people, the devices, and the goals may change, but the tools stay the same. Using Connect is a piece of cake.

If you have other examples you would like to share, we would love to hear them! Tweet us or comment on this post and tell us how you use Xodo Connect.

Xodo 2.0 is finally here! While we’re proud to introduce a number of fantastic features, we’re most excited to announce the official launch of our new real-time, browser-based PDF collaboration service, Xodo Connect.

With Xodo Connect, groups can work together on PDFs at the same time from any device, no signups or installs required.

It's easy to start a new Connection.
It’s easy to start a new Connection.

Xodo Connect is the only completely free service to offer live group interaction on PDFs through web browsers. Users can invite an unlimited number of clients, colleagues, classmates, friends, or family members to work together on a PDF at the same time without awkward attachments or software installs. Collaborators can view, annotate, and markup a document from any mobile or desktop device, and teams can use the live chat feature to discuss plans, brainstorm ideas, or crack jokes.

By bringing everyone together and keeping everything in the same place with Xodo Connect, we’re doing our bit to rid the world of long, confusing email threads, conflicting file versions, and misplaced notes.

Starting a Connection is easy. You simply open a PDF in Xodo’s mobile app, then use the Connect tool to send out email invitations. The people you invite do not need the mobile app and are not required to download, install, or sign up for anything – a web link in the invitation launches the file directly through Xodo’s browser-based app.

Once online, you can:

  • View – High quality vector rendering and viewing with display modes including single, continuous, facing, and cover; users can also rotate (desktop only) and zoom
  • Browse – Navigate by thumbnail layout, bookmark outline, annotation outline, or text search
  • Annotate – Highlight, underline, strikeout, draw shapes (lines, rectangles, circles, polygons), draw freehand, insert callouts, or attach sticky note comments
  • Interact – See who’s online, chat directly with other users, add comments to others’ annotations, or subscribe to receive new activity notifications by email
  • Download PDFs with all annotations embedded

Other new features in Xodo 2.0

The Xodo Development Team has worked extremely hard over the past few weeks to improve Xodo for all users. We received a lot of feedback which helped guide our efforts – once again, a great big “Thank you!” goes out to everyone who’s taken the time to contact us. As a result, Xodo 2.0 should provide an even more dynamic PDF experience than ever before, including:

iOS & Android

  • The ability to convert image files to PDF and use Xodo to view/annotate pictures on the go (includes .tiff, .tif, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, and .bmp on both platforms, as well as .bmpf, .ico, .cur, and .xbm on iOS)
  • [iOS only] The ability to convert Microsoft Office documents to PDF (includes Word (.doc), Excel (.xls), PowerPoint (.ppt), Pages, Numbers, and Keynote files)
  • Thumbnail page display mode makes navigation even easier and allows you to delete and reorder pages on the fly
  • The ability to create new blank PDF documents and use Xodo as an image-rich notepad
  • Built-in support tool lets you ask questions, provide feedback, or suggest ideas for new features directly from the Xodo app
  • [Android only] Full-screen immersive mode for KitKat 4.4

Windows

  • Freehand eraser tool for annotations (more updates and additions are coming soon!)

We have many more enhancements already planned for Xodo over the next few months, but, as always, if you can think of ways to make Xodo even better, we’d love to hear from you. Visit our Uservoice forum to vote for your favorite suggestions or add your own.

And don’t forget to join us on Twitter or Google+ to let us know what you think of Xodo Connect!
