Get more out of Xodo: Using Xodo for school, work, and play

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been more than a year since we launched Xodo! Since day one, listening to user feedback has been a top priority for our team. Your feedback helps us decide what new features to implement and how to make Xodo even better than before. Thank you for helping us grow by providing us with such valuable feedback!

Through your feedback, we’ve learned a lot about how you use Xodo. With users all over the globe, Xodo is being used in more ways than we initially imagined. If you’re looking for new ways to make Xodo a part of your life, read on for inspiration from users like you, including teachers, construction workers, and musicians:

Xodo for students

Many of us remember receiving endless paper handouts and lugging around heavy textbooks for school. Unsurprisingly, Xodo is popular with students for highlighting and marking up lecture slides and textbooks, as well as collaborating on group projects. See below for some feedback from students:

“Really great app for following slides in class and taking notes on them. Also great for taking notes on textbooks.”
“I use it daily! I am in nursing school and I have 4 PDF lectures a week. I can take notes on my tablet or phone if necessary and don’t have to print out all that paper! Great app!”
“I’m a college student and I use Xodo for taking notes directly on the PowerPoint slides my professors are teaching off of…Its easy connection to Dropbox makes it my favorite editing app – I can sort the files in Dropbox and access them from the app, and I can view the edited files on my computer or anywhere I have Dropbox.”

Xodo for teachers

If students love Xodo so much, it’s not surprising that teachers love it, too! Like their students, teachers use Xodo for making notes, but also for grading assignments:

“I’m a teacher. I use it for grading and I love it.”
“Great for grading and note taking!”

Xodo for work: Construction & real estate

Besides teachers, many other people also find Xodo useful in their line of work. Users in the construction and real estate industries work with blueprints and contracts on a daily basis and find Xodo’s fast rendering and form filling invaluable:

“I work construction as a foreman and I’ve tried them all. This is the best app by far for blueprints or any PDF. The ability to note on prints and sync with Google Drive all for free and without ads is indispensable.”
“I love that I do not have to print out another real estate document. Xodo allows you to fill in every single item, from date, property address, buyers, sellers, sales price, initials, signature.”

And of course Xodo’s functions are useful for many other lines of business:

“This app kicks you-know-what! This is very useful in my line of work. I even showed my office manager how it works. My schedule is sent via PDF attachments every night, and I can make notes on it as the day goes along. First 5-star rating I’ve given.”
“A brilliant app, have used it to mark up plenty of business documents. When teamed with a Dropbox account allows your markups to appear almost instantaneously on your other devices. Great for marking up documents on a tablet and reviewing them on another device.”
“Allows you to highlight, circle, and annotate PDF files. Perfect for meetings where electronic handouts are provided.”
“This app is great…No printer to get my application for a job. This app did all it said and got it filled out. Thank you, great app!”

Xodo for fun: Crafts & music

For many users, Xodo is a more convenient way to pursue their hobbies. The ability to access patterns in PDF form and mark them up on the go is great for those who love to knit and crochet:

“I love this app. I’m a crafter – knit and crochet – and with this app I can take my patterns with me on the run.”
“I download my crochet patterns, and needed a way to keep my place. Heard about Xodo on one of my Facebook groups. I am able to highlight my current row and add an arrow to note the direction I am going, with no need to print them out.”

Musicians also value Xodo’s annotation capabilities for marking up their sheet music, plus Xodo’s multiple viewing modes and fast rendering makes it easy for them to see the music how and when they need it:

“I use this app for sheet music in a band. Easy to adjust the size where I want it, and almost as easy as paper and pen to mark up the parts. With the continuous display option I can advance the music when I have rests, which is better than just turning a whole page.”
“I was using Adobe Reader before I switched to this app. My main reason for changing was that Adobe Reader loads PDF files rather slowly and it also did not support dual page view, and since I use it a lot for playing piano music from, that was a nuisance. Many of the other readers I have tried did not work for me because they did not have image smoothing, so music notes were sometimes hard to read. Xodo had dual page view and it also loads PDF files quite fast even with image smoothing.”

SmokeytheBear
Only YOU can help spread the word about Xodo.

Are you a fan of Xodo? Then you probably know that the Xodo team works tirelessly for our users. We respond to support requests as quickly as possible, add new features based on popular demand, and, of course, work on making Xodo the best PDF reader and editor out there. Not surprisingly, some common comments from users are to encourage us to accept donations, or even charge a small fee for the app!

We’ve had users ask us what the catch is – if we’re planning to introduce ads or take away features from the free version.

The truth is that there is no catch! Our goal with Xodo is to create the ultimate cross-platform PDF reading and editing experience for our users. We think that charging for the app, disabling features, or adding annoying ads would interfere with this goal. We’re focused on growing our app and our userbase.

The good news is that by licensing and customizing Xodo and related technologies to companies and other organizations, we’re able to keep Xodo a free, high-quality app that anyone can enjoy. Although we won’t ask for any donations or monetary support, we’d love it if you could support Xodo in one of these ways:

Some things are best kept a secret. Xodo isn't one of those things.

Xodo reviews word cloud

We thought it would be fun to visualize what the Xodo community thinks of Xodo by making a review-based word cloud. Here’s the result!

How did we make this? We took the text from all the reviews left on the Google Play store during the month of January and gave it to Wordle. The larger the word, the more frequently it appears reviews. Needless to say we’re happy with the positive feedback!

We have a ton of new features and enhancements in the pipeline, so stay tuned for even more Xodo goodness to come!

Xodo PDF – Now with tabs

We’re excited to announce that Xodo for Android now has browser style tabs! This feature allows instant switching between documents so that you can save time and maintain focus. Tabs are by far the most requested feature, so we hope you’re as excited as we are to see them hit the Play Store.

How does it work?

Xodo supports up to three tabs on phones and five tabs on tablets. When a document is opened it will open in a new tab. If the maximum number of tabs are already open, then the tab that has been least recently viewed is automatically closed. Of course the recent list will continue to work as it always has, so it can continue to be used to switch between documents too.

What do you think?

Do you like the new tabs? What should we do next? We’re always eager to hear from the Xodo community, so please let us know what you think at http://xodo.uservoice.com/ so that together we can make Xodo the #1 PDF app!

Top Xodo tips for getting back into the groove

It’s that wonderful time of year when the air gets crisp, your readings start to pile up faster than the falling leaves, and you’re thinking about how to ration your instant noodles to afford costumes for Halloween.

Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - Making School Less Depressing
Everyone is delighted to be back in class.

Wherever you are in the world, whether you’ve just started the new school year or are approaching the final stretch, the Xodo Team feels your pain.

We can’t do much about your food stocks (or your Halloween costumes), but we can make your studies easier!

To help you out, I asked our Development and Support team about their favorite Xodo tips and tricks.

Whether you’re working alone or interacting in a group, here are a few things you might not know you could do to make school just a little more tolerable with Xodo…

Xodo tips for when you’re working with others

Quickly share your work with classmates or instructors anywhere on the web without using email

Made comments on a PDF that you’d like to run by your classmates in your Facebook study group? Want to share class notes with a friend on Twitter? Need to quickly link a PDF article in an online class forum and can’t find the original URL?

Xodo makes it easy to do all these things, and that gets Vikki excited.

“My favorite thing about Xodo is that I can easily share documents on the web.”

Forget email. Forget uploading or attaching documents. Just get a link and share it.

To start, tap or click on theXodo Connect Xodo Connect icon, enter your name, and press OK. On the next screen, simply press OK – no need to enter emails or adjust settings.

Then head to Xodo’s browsing menu – clicking on the logo at the top left should work – and select the Xodo Connect tab. Find the document you just shared, press and hold (or right-click), and select Get Link.

This will copy a URL you can paste anywhere to open a read-only copy of your document.

Bonus tip: You can use Xodo Connect to deliver a remote presentation without the need for any installed tools or services. Just grab the link, share it with your audience any way you like, and then annotate the document while they’re viewing it.

Share, review, and discuss whiteboards or lecture notes using just your camera and Connect

Most classrooms have whiteboards. Whiteboards are great. They’re big, they’re bold, and they come with all kinds of colorful markers. (And who doesn’t like colorful markers?)

Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - Use Connect to capture and comment on whiteboards
Sadly, our whiteboards here at Xodo aren’t nearly this cool.

Unfortunately, all whiteboards eventually get cleaned. The important information disappears. And it’s really difficult for a group of people to add notes or comments to that information once the board has been erased.

What would be ideal is if there was some simple way to capture the information on the board in a central place where people can easily comment on it or even annotate it.

Kevin loves Xodo because it lets him do exactly that.

“After a meeting where we’ve scribbled a bunch of stuff on a whiteboard, I use Xodo to create a PDF from my iPad camera, and then I use Xodo Connect to share it with all the meeting participants. I like it because it lets everyone review and take notes on the document even after the meeting is done.”

Of course, you don’t have to confine yourself to whiteboards. Xodo will also let you do this with projectors, screens, and anything else you can take a photo of.

To convert a photo to a PDF you can use with Xodo, all you need to do is open the photo on your device the way you normally would, share it, and select Xodo from your sharing options.

Now, when you open Xodo, you’ll find the image at the top of your Recent Files list. Open the document and share it with your study group or other classmates by sending them an email invitation from Xodo Connect.

For easy instructions and more information about how to use Connect, check out this blog post.

Download the annotated PDF to preserve a snapshot of your work in Connect

It’s one thing to be able to collaborate on the fly without the need for email or having to install an annotator. But did you know that anyone in your group can save “hard copies” of the work you’ve done at any point?

It’s simple, says Matt.

“You just need to press the download button from inside Xodo Connect and then you’ll have a snapshot of all the comments for reference and offline viewing.”

To do that, open the document with Connect. On a desktop, simply click the download icon in the toolbar. On a mobile device, open your Settings menu (top right of the toolbar on most devices), and tap or click Download as PDF.

Xodo tips for when you’re working alone

When doing research online, save any PDF from your browser directly to Xodo using “Open With” (iPad/iPhone)

Xodo is a lot more powerful than your browser’s default viewer, and you can do a lot more with it.

For example, while you can annotate in Xodo, you can’t annotate PDFs if you open them directly through your browser. (Not unless you’re using Xodo Connect, that is!)

If you use your iPad to do a lot of your browsing and research, you’ll enjoy Ryan‘s tip:

“When I am surfing the web, and I find a PDF I want to read offline, I just tap the document, and select ‘Open With’ and then ‘Xodo’, and now I have it offline whenever I want in my Xodo inbox. I can then organize documents and folders later on.”

This is a quick and simple way to save PDFs to your device, and it works with just about any browser.

Instantly zoom into an important block of text

Xodo PDF Reader & Annotator - Helpful tips and tricks for school
Of course, staying awake is *also* important to success in school.

When you double tap on a section of text, Xodo zooms into that block, with the borders of the text becoming the borders of the screen.

Anatoly likes this because it helps him maintain his focus.

“While reading a large document it allows me to quickly zoom into the paragraph of text I am interested in.”

For people with poor eyesight, this is a simple way to reduce eye strain. It’s also useful for annotating parts of formulas or diagrams in physics and chemistry readings.

“Lock” the annotation toolbar while making lots of edits to save time

Sometimes you just want to read and maybe underline a couple of things here and there. But when you’re really buckling down to study, there’s a good chance any black-and-white page will soon look like a graffiti wall of colored highlights and squiggly lines.

Wouldn’t it be perfect if you could have the annotation toolbar in front of you the whole time?

Well, you can! In fact, this is Tomas‘s favorite trick.

“I change the settings to turn continuous annotation edit on when I have to make a lot of notes on one page and turn it off when I mostly read and only take occasional notes.”

To “lock” the toolbar, go to your app’s Settings menu and find Continuous Annotation Edit under the General heading. Make sure the box next to it is checked, then navigate back to your document.

Now, when you open the annotation toolbar, select a tool, and mark your document up with it, Xodo doesn’t automatically jump back to thePanPan tool after every annotation.

This is one way to speed up your annotating. But there are others. For example…

Annotate on the fly by scrolling with two fingers and editing with one

If you value efficiency even half as much as Shirley does, then this is the tip for you:

“My favorite trick is how you can use two fingers to scroll the page while highlighting or creating shapes such as lines, arrows, rectangles, and ovals with just one finger. This is especially useful when you’re reading a textbook and just want to highlight important keywords.”

If you’re only using one annotation tool – for example, if you plan to do nothing but highlight for long periods of time – you can save yourself lots of time by “locking” the toolbar the way Tomas suggested, selecting the Highlight tool, and then using two-finger scrolling to read and highlight on the fly.

Yup, it’s that simple. Scroll with two fingers. Annotate with one finger. No need to find the select or pan tools.

Easily resize any highlight, underline, or strikeout after you made it

Did your finger slip before you were done highlighting a sentence? Realized while reviewing your notes that you should have underlined the entire paragraph instead of just a few words?

Relax! You don’t have to delete and start over. As James points out, there’s an easy way to fix it in Xodo.

“If you make a highlight, and then tap to select it, you can use the text selection handles to resize it. Cool!”

The text selection handles – also sometimes called cursors – are the dots that appear at the far ends of an annotation when you select it. Hold and drag them to resize any highlight, underline, or strikeout.

I hope these tips help make your life just a little bit easier. School doesn’t have to be a total drag!

How about you? Do you have any Xodo tips of your own? Still unsure about how some of these tips and tricks work?
