9 reasons to replace Adobe Acrobat DC with Xodo PDF Reader

Interested in using Xodo on your computer? Check out the Xodo web app!

Adobe Acrobat DC is the latest version of the Adobe Reader for Android, iOS and desktop. But did you know with Xodo PDF Reader you can do the same things as Acrobat DC but without a subscription? In fact, Xodo is an alternative that can do much more than Acrobat DC. If you take a look at what you can do with Xodo, we think you’ll be surprised. Here are some subscription-only Acrobat DC that come standard with Xodo:

1. Create a new PDF
2. Delete and reorder pages

Xodo offers many features beyond what’s available in Acrobat DC (at any price). Some important ones include:

3. Tabs
4. More annotation types
5. More annotation colors and options
6. Dropbox and Google Drive sync
7. Online editing & collaboration
8. Open from an SD Card without copying
9. Flexible signing

Create a new PDF

Xodo can create blank PDFs (no subscription!), which is great for taking notes in class or at a meeting. It can also create a new PDF from an image, which is useful when you want to draw on an existing picture, for example of a whiteboard after a meeting. Here’s how to make a new PDF in Xodo:

1. Go to the Browse Folders tab, and navigate to the folder where you want to create the PDF.

2. Tap the blue ‘+’ circle in the lower right hand corner. This dialog will appear:

3. Tap “Blank PDF” or “PDF from Image”.  Follow the instructions (by choosing the number of pages, paper size, etc. or the photo you want to use), and the brand new PDF will be opened in the viewer.

Delete and reorder pages

Deleting and reordering pages is an advanced feature that even many longtime Xodo users might not know about. Here’s how to do it.

1. Open the PDF you want to edit. Tap the toolbar button that looks like a document page, pointed to by the red arrow:

Page

This dialog will appear:

2. Tap the bottom item, “Thumbnails”, to bring up the thumbnails browser:

3. Tap the “Edit” button in the upper right hand corner which puts the thumbnail browser into edit mode.

4. To delete pages, select the the pages you wish to delete by tapping on them. Selected pages have a checkmark appear in their upper right hand corner. You can deselect a page by tapping on it again. To delete the selected pages, tap the “Delete” button in the upper right hand corner. To reorder pages, tap and hold over the page you wish to move. It will become translucent and appear to hover above the other pages. Drag it to where you want this page to move to, and remove your finger from the screen. This will drop the page into place.

Xodo has other great features missing from Acrobat DC:

Tabs

With tabs you can have more than one document open at once, and quickly switch between them. If you use tabs in your web browser then you’ll quickly find it to be a must-have feature for PDF viewing. When you open a new document, it automatically opens in a new tab.

More annotation types

Xodo provides a large number of annotation types to let you express yourself exactly as you wish. Here’s the annotation toolbar:

Xodo PDF annotations include sticky notes, text highlights, strikethroughs, squigglies, underlines, signatures, ink, free text, and geometric shapes. We plan on adding even more in the future.

More annotation colors and options

Xodo lets you choose from a large number of colors, and save your favorites for later. It also lets you change the thickness and opacity of an annotation in the same spot, saving taps and time. With Acrobat DC you only get a few colors and have to deal with multiple popups to change properties.

Dropbox and Google Drive sync

Storing documents in the cloud is an easy way to keep your documents synced across devices. Millions of people are using Dropbox and Google Drive for this purpose, so who wants yet another cloud like Acrobat DC? With Xodo you can directly access and work with Dropbox and Google Drive.  Best of all, you don’t need to download a local copy of each document – you can read and work directly on the server’s version of the file. Dropbox changes are saved as you go, and Google Drive files are re-synced when you close the file. Access your Dropbox and Google Drive files by tapping on their respective tabs in the drawer.

Online sharing & collaboration

Acrobat DC can put a PDF online for downloading and viewing in a picture format. Xodo can do this too but in a much more useful way.  First of all, the document is displayed as a true PDF so you can zoom in with high quality and select/copy text. Secondly, it allows the people you’ve shared with to annotate the PDF right in a web browser, with everyone’s comments showing up on the same PDF. This saves you from endless email chains with people’s comments and annotations scattered through your inbox, and instead keeps all the information together, in one place.

Open from an SD Card without copying

SD cards are great for expanding your Android phone’s storage, but if you view a PDF on the SD card with Acrobat DC it will copy it to valuable internal storage. Xodo allows you to view and share documents directly on the SD card, no copying required.

Flexible signing

Acrobat DC can sign documents and save your signature for further use. However if you need a client or colleague to add a signature, it will automatically replace your saved signature. With Xodo, you can save your signature and have someone else sign a document without replacing your saved signature.

And more…

There’s a lot more to Xodo than what we’ve covered here, but maybe the best way to appreciate what it can do for you is to download it and give it a try. We think you’ll like what you’ll find.

Xodo is the ultimate cross-platform PDF viewer and annotator.

    • Hi Sagar, you can copy text by tapping and holding on the text until the quick tools menu pops up. Then tap Copy, which is on the left hand side of the quick tools menu. The text is now on your clipboard and ready to be pasted into your notepad application. Please feel free to contact support if you have any further questions.

  1. What if I have a client sign a document and I want to use it more than once. Is there a feature that allows me to copy and past signatures within the documents?

    • Hi DT, sorry for the late response! You can reuse a signature by making it the default signature, then choosing Use Saved Signature later. Hope that helps!

  2. Hi!
Thanks for your great product! As far as I know the one difference is that you don’t support text reflow and well at least in Windows Phone or small devices, it’s really necessary because it’s difficult when you’re reading. I wish you could consider my idea 🙂

    • Hi Federico, thank you so much for the kind words! Text reflow is one of the most requested features, so there’s a high possibility you’ll see it in a future update. Thank you again for using Xodo!

  3. Is there a way to stop the dropbox sync at full time?
For example, can it does like the google drive: Just sync when you’re finished with the document?
It should’ve had an option for that.
    By the way, excellent app.

    • Hi there, thank you for the feedback! You can add any feature suggestions to goo.gl/qu66sp – this helps us prioritize new features for upcoming releases. Thank you for using Xodo 🙂

  4. Hi Jay, thank you for your feedback. Xodo only requires access to your contacts for the Xodo Connect feature, which allows real-time, in-browser collaboration on PDFs. We do not store or access contact information for any other reason. If you have any other concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at xodo.com/support.

    • Hi Di, thanks for contacting us! Unfortunately this feature isn’t available yet in Xodo, but you can always submit your suggestions for us here: goo.gl/qu66sp. This is how we keep track of feature requests, so let us know what features you’d like Xodo to have!

  5. I have only recently started found Xodo and haven’t really started using it yet. But I want to compare it to Adobe Reader on my Windows Phone for opening pdf’s and highlighting lines of text for documents that I study and for viewing. A few questions I have are, 1. Does it or is there plans to have OneDrive sync, too since that’s what most Windows Phone users use for Cloud storage and online syncing? 2. When using on your computer, can you set Xodo as your default pdf viewer and if I’m working on a pdf can I read to Xodo, do I can view it anywhere?

    • Hi there, thanks for contacting us!
      1. OneDrive sync is a highly requested feature, and we may add it to Xodo soon. For now, you can upvote the user request for OneDrive sync here:. We add features based on popular demand, so please vote for any features you’d like to see.
      2. Yes, you can set Xodo as your default PDF viewer on your computer. We’re not sure what you mean by “read to Xodo or view it anywhere”. Please feel free to contact us via xodo.com/support so we can help you out!

      • Thanks for clarifying! Currently this syncing functionality is only available through Android and the web app. If you’d like to see it in other platforms (ie. Windows Phone), you can submit a suggestion here: goo.gl/qu66sp. Thanks for using Xodo!
